This article details how to use a basic AutoCAD command in GIS, and includes other commonly used AutoCAD commands that may be used in GIS.


The purpose of this article is to explain how to use GIS software such as AutoCAD in conjunction with GIS software such as ArcGIS. It is not a comprehensive guide to AutoCAD. Rather, it illustrates AutoCAD commands that may be useful to GIS users. This article is focused on the desktop version of AutoCAD. We have used AutoCAD and other software applications such as ArcGIS in a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, traditional GIS and ARGUS applications. However, many of the concepts discussed in this article are also applicable to web applications.

Using AutoCAD in GIS Applications

In traditional GIS, the user works in a separate drawing, or model, space. AutoCAD commands can be used in this space. The user then exports the drawing into a map space for use in the GIS environment.

In contrast, in GIS, users work in the map space. In this model, no separate drawing or model space is used. AutoCAD commands can be used in the map space. The user then exports the map space into a CAD drawing or model space to make the GIS data available to other users.

How to Work with GIS Software and AutoCAD

The following steps outline how to use GIS software such as ArcGIS and AutoCAD together.

1. Set up your computer for GIS. GIS applications often require large amounts of computer memory and disk space, and they may require high performance computers.

Some GIS software applications include specific requirements for the computer architecture. For example, ArcGIS requires either a 64-bit operating system or a 64-bit Windows operating system. AutoCAD and ArcGIS usually work together. However, AutoCAD may not work in a GIS environment if it does not have specific requirements.

Before installing AutoCAD, check the requirements for the GIS environment.

Check to see if your computer meets the requirements for GIS software. Some GIS software applications require specific computer hardware, such as certain processors and high-end graphics cards. Some GIS applications require minimum hardware specifications

the Viewer containing tool windows and a command-line utility that allows users to invoke the library procedures
the Application containing the application programming interface (API) and data access (DSACOMMAND)

External development libraries
Microsoft’s Visual Studio supports the development of AutoCAD extensions with Visual LISP for AutoCAD LT and with C++ for AutoCAD.

VBA for AutoCAD by Autodesk allows for the development of AutoCAD extensions in Visual Basic.

Interface programs
The interface programs convert the 3D geometry model (which is in a generic native file format called ADG) into a file format that is specific to the type of file being created, for example, for print, a PDF file is created. The interface programs are:
